Terwijl Jefferson Airplane op de radio klinkt, valt het leven van de Joodse professor Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) in 1967 uit elkaar. Zijn vrouw wil van hem scheiden, zijn dochter steelt geld van hem voor een neuscorrectie en zijn zoon houdt zich bezig met rock-'n-roll en blowt liever met z'n vrienden dan dat hij zich op z'n Bar Mitswa voorbereidt. Daarnaast zit hij nog opgescheept met zijn sociaal gehandicapte broer die weigert het huis te verlaten en wordt zijn hoofd ook nog eens op hol gebracht door de beeldschone buurvrouw, die steeds naakt ligt te zonnebaden. En aangezien dit nog lang niet alle problemen van Larry zijn, wordt het hem erg moeilijk gemaakt om 'een serieuze man' te zijn.
