Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt een vliegtuig met twee personen neergeschoten boven de woestijn. Alleen de piloot, Laszlo de Almásy, overleeft maar loopt ernstige brandwonden op. Nomaden brengen hem naar een ziekenhuis, waar hij niet in staat lijkt om te zeggen wie hij is. Hij komt bekend te staan als The English Patient en verpleegster Hana ontfermt zich over hem. Tijdens hun gesprekken onvouwt zich langzaam de ware toedracht tot het ongeluk.

As World War II unfolds, Almasy enters into a world of love, betrayal, and politics that is later revealed in a series of flashbacks while Almasy is on his death bed after being horribly burned in a plane crash
