Multimiljardair en geniale uitvinder Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), wordt zes maanden, nadat hij zijn identiteit als 'Iron Man' heeft onthuld, opnieuw gedwongen zijn krachten te bundelen. Nu de wereld bewust is van het feit dat Tony 'Iron Man' is, wordt hij door zowel de pers als de regering onder druk gezet om zijn uitvinding en technologie met het Amerikaanse leger te delen. Tony weigert informatie te onthullen, omdat hij bang is dat het in de verkeerde handen terecht zal komen. Met Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) en James ''Rhodey'' Rhodes (Don Cheadle) aan zijn zijde, smeedt Tony nieuwe plannen en moet hij het opnemen tegen nieuwe, duistere en gevaarlijke machten. Het duurt dan ook niet lang voordat de uiterst gevaarlijke Rus Ivan Vanko a.k.a. 'Whiplash' (Mickey Rourke) van zich laat horen...

Storyline
Tony Stark discloses to the world that he is the Iron Man and the senate presses him to deliver his technology to military purpose but Tony refuses telling that he has brought peace to the world. Meanwhile, the evil Ivan Vanko surprises the world attacking the Iron Man in Monaco with his armored suit. Ivan is arrested but Justin Hammer releases him simulating his death. Meanwhile Tony is depressed expecting to die sooner and Lieutenant Colonel James 'Rhodey' Rhodes steals an armored suit from Tony and brings it to the army. The high command delivers the technology to Justin Industry to weapon the armor and Ivan builds an army of remote controlled suit of armors
