Japanese auteur Nagisa oshimas BAFTA winning language debut, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence unites two classic cult figures – rock legend David Bowie (In one of his finest roles) and the inimitable actor/director Takeshi “Beat” Kitano.
Adapted by Paul Mayersberg, from the novel by Laurens Van Der Post, the film is a riveting exploration of racism, brutality and the sparks that fly when cultures collide. Concerntrating on a war of wills between enigmatic and rebellious POW Jack Celliers, (Bowie) and camp commandant capt Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also contributes the films bewitching score).
Intelligently exploring the psychology of its characters, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence also hints at a sexual attraction between Celliers and Yonoi, and as such is an audacious and original addition to the POW genre.

* The original release for this film was 1983. It was re released by optimum as a special collectors edition in 2005 (it gives both dates on my DVD) and has been digitally remastered using new 35mm film. IMDB does not have this version on its data base, only the special feature on this disc “The oshima gang” dated 2005 (ive just put the film up). The film itself is a masterpiece as it depicts how cruel human nature can be if taught to hate, but also how to overcome that hatred if you choose too. The human mind can be very strong, but also very fragile. The score is thought provoking with the elements of love, hate, peace, war, hope and despair. A truly thought provoking film in all aspects.*
