Sam (Josh Radnor) is een schrijver uit New York die nauwelijks rond kan komen. Hij leeft vrij van verantwoordelijkheden en is van niemand afhankelijk. Dit verandert allemaal wanneer hij een jongetje ziet dat zijn familie kwijt is. Er ontstaat een vriendschap tussen het jongetje, een weeskind, dat in zijn korte leven van pleeggezin naar pleeggezin verhuisd is, en Sam, die de misschien onverstandige beslissing maakt hem in huis te nemen.
