De film vertelt het verhaal van Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer), die met zijn theatergezelschap stad en land afreist om het publiek nog nooit vertoond vertier voor te schotelen. Zijn gave maakt het zijn publiek mogelijk om via een magische spiegel aan de realiteit van alledag te ontsnappen. Maar er rust ook een vloek op hem. Al eeuwen lang sluit hij namelijk weddenschappen af met de duivel, Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), waaraan hij o.m. zijn exclusieve onsterfelijkheid te danken heeft. Diezelfde Mr. Nick keert nu terug om een prijs voor hemzelf op te eisen, namelijk de innemende en kostbare dochter van Dr. Parnassus, Valentina (Lily Cole), op de dag dat ze zestien jaar wordt. Dr. Parnassus heeft nog een laatste weddenschap metMr. Nick nodig om zich uit deze benarde situatie te redden.

Plot

In London, the sideshow troupe of Doctor Parnassus promises to the audiences a journey to the "Imaginarium", an imaginary world commanded by the mind of Doctor Parnassus where dreams come true. In the stories that Doctor Parnassus tells to his daughter Valentina, to the midget Percy, and his assistant Anton, he claims to have more than one thousand years; however, when he felt in love for a mortal, he made a deal with the devil Mr. Nick trading his immortality per youth.
