Sansho the Bailiff (Japanese: ???? Sansho Dayu') is a 1954 film by Japanese film director Kenji Mizoguchi. Based on a short story of the same name by Mori Ogai, it tells the story of two aristocratic children sold into slavery. It is often considered one of Mizoguchi's finest films, along with Ugetsu and The Life of Oharu. It bears his trademark interest in freedom, poverty and woman's place in society, and features beautiful images and long and complicated shots. The director of photography for this film was Mizoguchi's regular collaborator Kazuo Miyagawa.
L'intendente Sansho è un film del 1954 diretto da Kenji Mizoguchi. Con questo film, considerato tra i capolavori dell'intero Cinema giapponese, il regista analizza temi quali la libertà e la condizione della donna all'interno della società, attraverso l'abituale utilizzo di bellissime scenografia e di lunghi e complessi piani sequenza.

L'intenzione iniziale di Mizoguchi era di mettere al centro della narrazione la figura del feroce intendente, salvo poi scegliere di raccontare la triste storia dei due fratelli Anju e Zushiô
