Het is 1964. De Oost-Europese Selma (Björk) emigreert met haar zoon Gene naar Amerika. Ze werkt dag en nacht in de fabriek voor het bestaan van haar zoon. Selma ziet slecht en heeft een erfelijke ziekte waarbij ze uiteindelijk blind zal worden. Gene heeft deze ziekte ook. Selma spaart haar geld om een toekomstige oogoperatie voor Gene te betalen.
