Vier muzikale families uit Frankrijk, Duitsland, Rusland en Amerika, worden gevolgd tijdens en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Te midden van de verschrikkingen van de oorlog proberen deze mensen hun levens te leiden, maar waar de één een nazi-pianist is, wordt de ander afgevoerd naar een concentratiekamp. Het enige dat deze verschillende mensen bindt is de muziek.
