Het liefdesleven van Charlotte (Jennifer Lopez) is een ramp. Tot ze op een feestje de knappe dokter Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan) ontmoet. Hij lijkt de man van haar dromen en het jonge koppel besluit zo snel mogelijk te trouwen. Kevin's moeder Viola (Jane Fonda) is daar echter helemaal niet blij mee. Zij heeft hele andere huwelijkskandidaten voor haar zoon op het oog. Bovendien is ze net haar baan als televisiepresentatrice kwijtgeraakt, wat haar humeur niet ten goede komt. Met een suikerzoete glimlach op haar gezicht besluit ze de trouwpartij op alle mogelijke manieren te dwarsbomen. Samen met haar assistente Ruby (Wanda Sykes) ontpopt ze zich tot een ware nachtmerrie voor de jonge bruid. Maar Charlotte piekert er niet over om haar geliefde zomaar af te laten pakken. Zo ontstaat er een hilarische strijd tussen Viola en Charlotte...

After years of looking for Mr. Right, Charlotte 'Charlie' Cantilini finally finds the man of her dreams, Kevin Fields, only to discover that his mother, Viola, is the woman of her nightmares. A recently fired news anchor who is afraid she will lose her son the way she has just lost her career, Viola determines to scare off her son's new fiancé by becoming the world's worst mother-in-law. While Viola's long-time assistant Ruby does her best to help Viola execute her crazy schemes, Charlie decides to fight back and the gloves come off as the two women battle it out to see just who is the alpha-female.
