Nadat hij als kind getuige was van de moord op zijn ouders heeft multimiljonair Bruce Wayne (Keaton) gezworen om de misdaad te bestrijden.
Bij een overval op een chemische fabriek valt de misdadiger Jack Napier (Nicholson) door toedoen van Batman in een vat met zuur, waardoor hij misvormd raakt.
