Het is 2050. Kate Bowman leidt de belangrijkste missie van de 21ste eeuw: het voortbestaan van het menselijke ras. Ter voorbereiding van de kolonisatie gaat Bowman met haar crew naar Mars om de gebreken te herstellen van het Mars Terraforming Project. Wanneer er zich een explosie voordoet in de ruimte en het ruimteveer ernstig beschadigd wordt, geeft ze de bemanning opdracht het schip ter verlaten. Terwijl de crew zich voorbereid op een veiligere landing blijft Kate op het moederschip. Maar dan loopt het één na het ander mis.

In the near future, Earth is dying. A new colony on Mars could be humanity's only hope. A team of American astronauts, each a specialist in a different field, is making the first manned expedition to the red planet and must struggle to overcome the differences in their personalities, backgrounds and ideologies for the overall good of the mission.
