Love and Violence play a major role in Kollywood, and Mathikettan Salai is no exception to that trend. Mathikettan Salai is a one sided love story directed by G. Pattu Rajan. The first half treads along the path of the lifestyle of four friends and romance, narrated in an interesting manner. Though there is an unexpected twist half way though, the second half departs down the route of blood spilling murders.

Director Pattu Rajan's debut venture is good with a fresh cast and some neat and entertaining sequences. However, a clearer script would have helped better. There is no evidence to show if Kaviya loves Ganesh, and it is not clear why Ganesh betrays his friends. The climax is also confusing as we do not get a clear idea of Ganesh's intentions.

Aathers plays as Ganesh and he has handled the negative role well, though he would be better if he improves his expressions. Divya Nagesh, who played the young Arundhati in Arundhati and the lead role in Pasakara Nanbargal plays as Kaviya. She looks like a child artist and her performance is very average. The three newcomers who played as Ganesh's friends and Meera Krishnan have performed well. Singamuthu is average.

S. Taj's cinematography and Murugan's art direction are excellent. Srikath Deva's music is the major positive with Azhagazhaghai Therikirathey and Naadu Summa Kidanthaalum are the good song numbers. His background score reminds us of Mishkin's Anjathey.

Pattu Rajan's dialogues coupled with an impressive narrative style are the best aspects of Mathikettan Salai with some close resemblance to Sasikumar's Subramaniyapuram. Mathikettan Salai is a sure Can Watch!
