Plot:
Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff) is a family man and business owner, a few months away from marrying his girlfriend of six years (Laura Porter, played by Marisol Nichols), and mother of his son, Michael. One night a burglar enters his home. Wade pursues him out onto the front lawn and strikes him across the head with a baseball bat, killing him. The district attorney, while sympathetic to Wade's case, is nevertheless compelled by the evidence to reject his plea of self-defense and convict him of involuntary manslaughter. Wade's subsequent incarceration forces him into a world unlike any he had known before. He is first confronted by the crowded confines of the county jail and then 'The SHU', or Segregated/security Housing Unit of the prison. The SHU involves twenty three hours a day in a concrete box in shackles, listening to hundreds of barked orders and getting no warning shots for annoying the cops. The only freedoms left to Wade are in his head and in the yard. But the yard, as he soon finds out, has been turned into a figurative gladiator arena with the inmates of the SHU as the gladiators, compelled to fight at the whims of the corrections officers; here prison politics and violence rule. As he struggles to survive inside, Wade discovers two things: the humanity of his cellmate, an infamous multiple murderer (John Smith played by Val Kilmer), and the growing sadism of the SHU's commander (Lt. Jackson played by Harold Perrineau).
