De kinderen Conrad en Sally Walden zijn alleen thuis samen met hun goudvis. Het regent en ze vervelen zich. Maar dan gaat de bel en een grote kat met een rare hoed komt de kamer binnen. Het is de Cat in the Hat die samen met zijn vrienden langskomt om lol te maken. In het begin is het allemaal leuk en alle verbeelding wordt werkelijkheid. Maar dan wordt het te bont en moet de kat echt weg voordat de ouders van Conrad en Sally thuiskomen.

Conrad and Sally Walden (Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning) are home alone with their pet fish. It is raining outside, and there is nothing to do. Until The Cat in the Hat ('Mike Myers' ) walks in the front door. He introduces them to their imagination, and at first it's all fun and games, until things get out of hand, and The Cat must go, go, go, before their parents get back.
