ANOTHER 80s TV classic has been adapted for the big screen as 21 Jump Street hits UK cinemas today (March 16, 2012).

The original series aired between 1987 and 1991 and followed youthful undercover officers sent to infiltrate schools and colleges. Notably, it was the launchpad for Johnny Depp's career and made him a teen idol.

Revived in film form - and this time in a comedy format unlike the serious tone of the series - Sony's big-screen incarnation sees Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind.

Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring.

But they find high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier - and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.

It's directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), with Depp making a cameo as Tom Hanson, his original TV role. Also in the cast is rapper/actor Ice Cube as Captain Dickson - as can be seen in a featurette included below. Producers are Douglas S. Rosen, Neal H. Moritz and Stephen J. Cannell.

The unlikely pairing of Tatum and Hill has succeeded, judging from the critics' reactions. Review compilation site Rotten Tomatoes gives an overall score of 87 per cent and a verdict of: "A smart, affectionate satire of 80s nostalgia and teen movie tropes, 21 Jump Street offers rowdy mainstream comedy with a surprisingly satisfying bite."
