Herman Melville's classic 1851 sea tale about the vengeful sea Captain Ahab who seeks to kill the great white whale who took his leg and is willing to forego the safety and endurance of his crew to do it. The tale is told from the vantage of the only surviving member, Ishmael, a young man who joins the crew of the Pequod for his first seafaring with the aid of his harpoonist friend, Queequeeg.

Il capitano Achab ingaggia l'equipaggio della baleniera Pequod in una forsennata caccia a una inafferrabile balena bianca, mostro dei mari e terrore dei marinai. J. Huston è caduto in piedi nel ridurre in immagini il grande romanzo (1851) di Herman Melville. Film compatto, coerente, sostenuto da una splendida fotografia di O. Morris. Non poche le sequenze memorabili. G. Peck se la cava, O. Welles straordinario. Sceneggiato da J. Huston (anche produttore) con Ray Bradbury. Era già stato filmato nel 1930 con la regia di Lloyd Bacon e John Barrymore (Achab).
