In the late twenty-third century, the gala maiden voyage of the third Starship Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) boasts such luminaries as Pavel Chekov, Montgomery Scott and the legendary Captain James T. Kirk as guests. But the maiden voyage turns to disaster as the unprepared ship is forced to rescue two transport ships from a mysterious energy ribbon. The Enterprise manages to save a handful of the ships' passengers and barely makes it out intact... but at the cost of Captain Kirk's life. Seventy-eight years later, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D find themselves at odds with the renegade scientist Soran... who is destroying entire star systems. Only one man can help Picard stop Soran's scheme... and he's been dead for seventy-eight years.

Durante il varo dell'astronave USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B), l'equipaggio risponde ad un segnale di soccorso. Durante il salvataggio l'astronave è colpita dall'energia di uno strano fenomeno, chiamato Nexus, che apre uno squarcio nello scafo. Il capitano James T. Kirk è considerato disperso in quanto si trovava nella zona danneggiata.

78 anni dopo, l'USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), capitanata da Jean-Luc Picard, cerca di sventare i piani del dottor Tolian Soran, uno scienziato El Auriano salvato a suo tempo dal Nexus e determinato a tornarci. Il Nexus è infatti descritto dalle persone salvate, tra cui la barista El Auriana dell'Enterprise Guinan, come una specie di paradiso in cui è possibile rivivere i migliori periodi della propria vita e in cui tutti i propri desideri si avverano senza mai sperimentare malattia, vecchiaia, morte.
