De negentiende eeuw. De film gaat over een aantal personen die op de ÚÚn of andere manier allemaal aan het lot van Pedro da Silva, een wees die naar een kostschool gaat, gelinkt zijn. Er is Pater Dinis, die een afstammeling van de aristocratische libertijnen is en later een held wordt die vecht voor gerechtigheid, een gravin, die gek wordt van haar eigen jaloezie en op wraak uit is, en een welgestelde zakenman die stiekem zijn hele vermogen verdiend heeft als een bloeddorstige piraat.
