Disney's dertigste avondvullende animatiefilm werd een van de meest succesvolle. Het bekende verhaal over het beeldschone meisje dat verliefd wordt op een betoverde, monsterlijk uitziende prins werd al eens eerder verfilmd (in live action) door Jean Cocteau.
