Twee levens, die van Alice en van Mattia, beginnen afzonderlijk maar kennen een gelijkaardige levensloop. Ze groeien langzaam naar elkaar toe en komen tot de vaststelling dat ze heel wat met elkaar gemeen hebben. Maar tegelijkertijd zijn er zaken die ervoor zorgen dat ze elkaar toch op afstand houden. Ze zijn immers allebei getekend door gebeurtenissen uit hun kindertijd en dragen deze onvermijdelijk met zich mee voor de rest van hun leven.
