Dit vervolg op Sissi gaat over haar eerste huwelijksjaren met Franz Joseph van Oostenrijk. Het valt de jonge keizerin moeilijk zich geheel te richten naar de strenge hofetiquette, vooral verpersoonlijkt door aartshertogin Sophie, haar schoonmoeder. Na de geboorte van Sissi's dochtertje spitsen de reeds ontstane conflicten zich toe: Sophie wil namelijk het kind opvoeden.
