Cesar lavora come portiere in un palazzo di Barcellona. Non sa cosa sia la felicità e si accontenta di trovare le sue ragioni di vita giorno dopo giorno. Affronta il suo lavoro quotidiano praticamente ignorato dagli inquilini del palazzo, ma lui li osserva attentamente. Conosce i dettagli più intimi delle loro vite, sa tutto di loro, specialmente di una di loro. Clara è una giovane donna spensierata e contenta, che vede sempre il lato positivo nelle cose. Il suo approccio positivo alla vita e il suo costante buon umore fanno venire a Cesar la pelle d'oca. Non sarà contento fino a quando non sarà riuscito a cancellare quel sorriso dalla faccia di lei, una volta per tutte, perché Cesar si nutre del dolore degli altri. Gode dell'infelicità e delle angosce altrui e non c'è niente che ami di più che piantare il seme della disperazione e vederlo crescere. In Clara ha trovato la vittima perfetta...
