Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) wordt beschuldigd van de moord op zijn vrouw en haar minnaar. Hij houdt vol dat hij onschuldig is, maar krijgt toch tweemaal levenslang in de strenge gevangenis Shawshank. Hij raakt bevriend met de zwarte medegevangene Ellis Boyd Redding (Morgan Freeman), die voor iedereen spullen kan regelen en de bijnaam 'Red' heeft. En er zijn nog twee dingen die Andy op de been houden: hoop en een poster van Rita Hayworth.

Storyline

Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940's, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red, the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner.
