In una cittadina americana, Perfection Valley, situata tra aspre montagne rocciose e sterminate distese sabbiose, improvvisamente avvengono morti misteriose. Vengono trovate uccise in modo raccapricciante sei persone: Val ed Earl, due giovani tuttofare, e Rhonda, sismologa, non capiscono quale possa essere la causa delle sciagure. Alla fine si accorgono della presenza minacciosa di enormi e disgustosi vermoni che si muovono sottoterra e vengono attratti da qualsiasi vibrazione del suolo.
