Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is een cynische TV-weerman, die er regelmatig op uit wordt gestuurd om verslag te doen op locatie. Deze keer trekt hij, samen met producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) en cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott), naar het stadje Punxatawny. Daar viert men op 2 februari \"Groundhog Day\" een dag die draait rond een bosmarmot die uit zijn schuilplaats kruipt. Aan de manier waarop het beest dit doet (ziet hij zijn schaduw wel of niet?) gelooft men af te kunnen leiden of de winter nog een half jaar aanhoudt. Phil heeft echter weinig trek in al dit gedoe. Op 2 februari wordt hij \'s ochtends wakker in het plaatselijke hotel, houdt ongeïnteresseerd zijn praatje en hoopt daarna vlug weer naar huis te kunnen. Vanwege een sneeuwstorm zijn de wegen echter afgesloten, zodat Phil en zijn crew gedwongen zijn om nog een avond in het stadje te overnachten. Als \'s ochtends de wekker gaat, is Phil in eerste instantie opgelucht. Maar dan krijgt hij de schrik van zijn leven: het blijkt namelijk dat het alweer 2 februari is en dat hij Groundhog Day helemaal opnieuw moet beleven. En dit herhaalt zich: telkens wanneer Phil ’s ochtends wakker wordt is het 2 februari. Dezelfde dag lijkt zich dus voor eeuwig te herhalen. Een ramp voor Phil. Toch komt hij er langzaam achter dat zijn bizarre situatie ook voordelen biedt.

TV weatherman Phil Connors is cynical, to say the least, and having to go yet again go to Punxsutawney, Pa. on February 2 to see if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow isn't his idea of fun. He's grumpy with his segment producer Rita and downright nasty with cameraman Larry. He doesn't take the shadow business at all seriously but the next morning, awakens to find he is reliving the same day. Initially disbelieving and fighting what is happening to him, Phil eventually accepts it that he will re-live the same day over and over again. He uses the opportunity to acquire new skills - piano playing, ice carving among them - and soon becomes the most admired man in Punxsutawney. Just how long he relives each day however is anyone's guess.
