Wandering cowboy Clint Barkley spots runaway horse Smoky and leads him back to his ranch. Owner Julie Richards hires the drifter despite Clint's refusal to talk about his past. Clint tames the headstrong black stallion and man and horse become close. Smoky has great atmosphere, thanks to the combination of the lovely Wyoming scenery and the music of Burl Ives which accompanies lazy Sundays in the bunkhouse and evenings on the range.
