It begins with Cory, an ambitious Chicago slum kid with a knack for gambling, working as a bus-boy at a swanky Wisconsin resort hotel. Cory yearns to be a big-shot and win over heiress Abby Vollard. It ends with Cory as a big-time gambler, discovering the snobbishness of Abby, but finding himself cast sublimely into the arms of her sweet kid sister, Jen. The film was atypical of Hollywood fare of its day, but it found favour with avant garde critics, including Jean-Luc Godard who praised the film and considered it an influence on his own early work as a filmmaker.
