In 2013, an interdimensional portal, the Breach, is opened in the Pacific Ocean
by extraterrestrials, who send giant monsters called Kaiju to attack cities on
the Pacific Rim. To counter the attacks, humanity initiate the Jaeger Program
constructing giant mecha robots which are controlled by two or more pilots, who
are mentally linked via “drifting” to carry the heavy psychological load of
operating the machines. In 2020, pilots Raleigh and Yancy Becket, take their
Jaeger, Gipsy Danger, to rescue a fishing boat from a Kaiju. However, the Kaiju
blindsides the Jaegar, ultimately wrecking it and killing Yancy. Raleigh single
handidly pilots Gipsy Danger to shore after killing the Kaiju, but quits the
program, traumatised by Yancy’s death.
