Sonic Heroes (ソニック ヒーローズ Sonikku Hīrōzu) is a platform video game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, developed by Sonic Team USA and published by Sega for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox consoles and Microsoft Windows. It was first released in Japan in December 2003, and then worldwide in early 2004. Released over two years after the series' prior entry, Sonic Adventure 2, it is notable for being the first original game in the main series to released on home consoles following Sega's transition to a third-party developer. Contrary to other entries in the series, Sonic Heroes features twelve playable characters divided into pre-determined teams of three. Gameplay requires players to switch between team members and take advantage of each's unique abilities to complete levels.
