ISMAIL KADARE (b. 1936) is a best-selling Albanian novelist, poet and essayist whose work has explored his country's history and culture and gained an international readership.

The central themes of Kadare's works, which often draw heavily on his own life, include Albanian history, politics, and folklore, blood-feud tradition and ethnicity, and above all totalitarianism and its mechanisms. His novels draw on legends surrounding the historical experiences of Albanian people, the representation of classical myths in modern contexts, and the totalitarian regime in Albania. They are obliquely ironic as a result of trying to withstand political scrutiny. He has been likened to the Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko for dissenting from state-imposed guidelines for literature and to the Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez, in part because of their common interest in the grotesque and the surreal.

Kadare has won the inaugural Man Booker International Prize (for "a body of work [that] has had a truly global impact"), the Prince of Asturias Award of Arts (2009), and the Jerusalem Prize (2015). The Independent (London) newspaper said of Kadare: "He has been compared to Gogol, Kafka and Orwell. But Kadare's is an original voice, universal yet deeply rooted in his own soil."
