HENRY GREEN, the pseudonym of Henry Vincent Yorke (1905-1973), was an English novelist and industrialist whose novels are important works of English modernist literature. His sophisticated satires mirrored the changing class structure in post-World War II English society. Underlying their pleasant surfaces are disturbing and enigmatic perceptions. His best-regarded works are the laconically titled comedies LIVING (1929), PARTY GOING (1939), and LOVING (1945).

Green was admired in his lifetime by such luminaries as W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Eudora Welty, Anthony Burgess, and Rebecca West. The latter said of him, "He was a truly original writer, his prose was fresh minted, he drove his bloodless scalpel inches deeper into the brain and heart, none of it had been said before." V. S. Pritchett called Green "the most gifted prose writer of his generation."

An early (and nearly-accurate) autobiography, PACK MY BAG, was published in 1943. SURVIVING (1993), introduced by John Updike, collects never-before-published short stories, pieces on London during the Blitz, journalism, book reviews, a play, and more.
