Last week U2 took everyone by surprise with the release of a new single, "Ahimsa", together with Indian composer AR Rahman (Oscar winner for the soundtrack of "The millionaire"). Surprised up to a point: the The band is still on record, but currently touring South East Asia and the ocean continent, and is no stranger to the release of impromptu singles, off-albums (like "Invisible" and "Ordinary love" a few years ago).

Just as it is not new to remixing EPs, it has a long tradition in the field. "The eternal remixes", however, is an operation linked to the single, and above all to the Indian market: on December 15th U2 will play for the first time ever in the country, in Mumbai.

Once the context is explained, the text remains. And alas, the operation is very little - the contusion with Indian music is interesting, but the result is not convincing. "Ahimsa" is a weak song, with a good dose of autotune, with Edge's guitar in the background and many choirs.

The "Eternal remixes" are instead four songs from the repertoire entrusted to the care of local artists. The one that works the most is "Pride": slowed down and reread with the use of tabla and Indian voices, with a suggestive effect. The "Lost stories remix" of "Love is bigger than anything in its way" makes U2 sound like Coldplay, just a little more ethnic. "You're the best thing about me" in the OX7GEN version is a little more danceable, complete with a drop and restart. "Beautiful day" is the most radical reinterpretation: it is sung almost entirely by Bollywood star Amaal Mallik, and adds a sitar solo and a funky break. It sounds a bit tamarra to our ears, but it is headed for another market.
