Opus was first launched in 2012 by the Xiph Foundation - the same developers behind FLAC - and is designed to achieve the highest possible quality of any lossy format even at low bitrates. Multiple blind tests comparing it to MP3 and AAC have shown it is noticeably superior to both at the same bitrate. For this collection the maximum bitrate of 256kbps VBR was used but the Opus VBR algorithm often goes above 256kbps. As a result the audio quality is so close to lossless FLAC most people won't tell the difference even through a good DAC and headphones.
