Matmos are a couple of brilliant Bay Area brains who delight in experimental electronic composition. Their songs often consist of abstract sources of sampling (from everyday objects to near-unobtainable found sounds) that they categorically rearrange into bizarre and intriguing rhythms and melodies. As Wikipedia aptly summarizes, they "...gained notoriety for their use of samples including 'freshly cut hair' and 'the amplified neural activity of crayfish' on their first album and 'recorded the snips, clicks, snaps, and squelches of various surgical procedures, then nipped and tucked them into seven remarkably accessible, melodic pieces of experimental techno' for their album A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure."
Quasi-Objects is their second release, which immediately continues their signature sound cultivated from their eponymous first album. An absolute must-have for curators of the experimental.
The front cover insert somewhat flippantly notes the sampling, methods and personnel for each track:
Quote:

1. balloons, whoopee cushion, synthesizer. Title courtesy of Karl Force. 2. slide guitar by M.C. Schmidt; phone guitar by Tim Furnish. 3. composed entirely from a single sample of a phonograph needle skipping on the runout groove of a vinyl lp whose name can't be revealed for legal reasons. 4. samples taken from "silent recordings". The set up is as follows: a 4-channel tape recorder, with nothing input to it, records. Two walkie-talkies are held above the recorder and both are placed in "transmit" mode--the resulting waves of interference can be played gesturally in a manner akin to the theremin. Silent interference registers upon the circuitry as sound. In loving memory of Douglas Racic (1960-1994). 5. composed entirely from samples of improvisations on a five string banjo. Title from Wallace Stevens' "The Comedian as the Letter C" 6. source material gathered entirely from the human body. FEaturing the bodies of M.C. Schmidt, Drew Daniel, Kalonica McQueston, Robeena Diet Biscuit, and Katie Williams. Slowed down whistles and kisses. 7. all sounds generated by manipulating a stretched wet latex t-shirt. Tapes of latex estranged through re-recording at Candlestick Point Bird Sanctuary.
All songs (c)1998 Matmos. DREW DANIEL + M.C. SCHMIDT: sequencing, sampling, W-30, SH-101, Mono/Poly, digital editing, banjo, electric guitar, latex clothing, balloons, Whoopee cushion, body sounds, field recording, quasi-objects, mix. RECORDED AT HOME.
