It was No.10 on the NY Times bestselling list for 1995, and made into a popular movie, directed and starring the ever-incredible Robert Redford, with Kristin Scott Thomas, and Scarlett Johansson (14 years old).
As good as the movie was, the book is (as usual) much better.

The main character, according to writer Nicholas Evans' website, is modeled after horse whisperer Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt and, in particular, their younger disciple Buck Brannaman. Brannaman also doubled for Robert Redford in the film and served as the consultant. Evans himself said, "Others have claimed to be the inspiration for Tom Booker in The Horse Whisperer.
