English description:
Based on Raymond Briggs\' book. A old British couple, Jim and Hilda, who live in the countryside, believe in the fact that the Government will always know what it is doing. However the world is fast heading for the Third World War between the US and the Soviets. Jim prepares for it by building a shelter using Goverment pamphlets however both of them still believe that the war will be fought like the Second World War and they can\'t fully understand that the war will be fought with nuclear weapons. All too soon, war breaks out and Jim and Hilda survives a nuclear blast. They stand back and wait, they believe, for help from the Government and for things to get back to normal in a couple of days, little knowing that help isn\'t on its way, and that, unknown to them, Jim and Hilda are slowly dying from the \"fallout\" radition poisoning and they will probably not survive... Das unschuldige Rentnerpaar Jim und Hilda führt ein ruhiges Leben in einem abgelegenen Häuschen auf dem Lande. Als sie aus dem Radio von der Gefahr eines Atomkrieges erfahren, baut Jim nach den von der Regierung herausgegebenen Anleitungen einen Schutzraum, in dem sie den Angriff tatsächlich überleben. Im Glauben, das Schlimmste sei nun überstanden, warten sie auf Hilfe - ohne zu ahnen, dass diese Hilfe nicht kommen wird und sie selbst am radioaktiven Niederschlag sterben werden. Emotional aufwühlender Zeichentrickfilm vor allem für Erwachsene, dessen liebevoller Zeichenstil in absolutem Kontrast zu seinem erschütternden Inhalt steht. Entstanden auf der Basis des gleichnamigen Buchs von Raymond Briggs, der auch für das Drehbuch verantwortlich zeichnet, stellt der Film ein Zeitzeugnis der Ängste Mitte der achtziger Jahre dar, das auch heute noch fesselt: Obwohl die Rentner in ihrer Naivität Karikaturen sind, nimmt der Zuschauer an ihrem Schicksal Anteil und wünscht sich, sie könnten überleben - während er sich gleichzeitig bewusst ist, dass dafür keine Chance besteht.
