The story is set at a fertility spa, a place where middle-aged women go to bathe and be pampered, in the hope that their natural femininity will be inspired to coax a child from their so far barren womb. Ruzena, a young and comely nurse, is suffering from a certain deadness of spirit.

Surrounded as she is by women, she despairs of ever finding love and children of her own. A chance encounter with Klima, a celebrated trumpeter,causes her to fall pregnant. She telephones him, beginning the story and the five days in which an increasingly large cast of characters fall under the sway of this accidental pregnancy.
