People don’t normally think of Samuel Beckett as a comic writer. People are wrong. In fact I would argue he was largely a comic writer, two of his best known works, Waiting For Godot and Krapp’s Last Tape, most successfully performed by actors who have great comic timing and intonation.
Beckett’s novel Molloy might be surreal, gruesome, bewildering and nightmarish but above all it is laugh-out-loud funny, particularly Part Two, like Agatha Christie on LSD. I’ve listened to it so often I seem to have worn out the CDs.
The plot? God knows, but with writing of this quality what does it matter?
I love audiobooks, but I am often dismayed by the appalling quality of the narration. Even a great book can be ruined by robotic reading, but Barrett and Crowley give the definitive performance in this Naxos recording.
