Een film over de legende Jesse James gezien vanuit het oogpunt van Robert Ford, die niet alleen grote bewondering voor de snelste schutter van het Wilde Westen had, maar zich ook bij zijn bende aansloot.
Langzaam maar zeker ziet Ford echter in dat James niet de perfecte held is uit de boekjes.
