Het jonge meisje Lyra Belacqua leeft in Oxford in een parallel universum. Hier zijn de zielen van mensen
zichtbaar als dieren die hun overal volgen. Bij kinderen kunnen de zogenaamde deamons nog van gedaante
verwisselen. Op een dag hoort ze haar oom een discussie voeren over een nieuw fysiek element: Dust.
Dit element heeft de kracht om werelden te verenigen, waardoor het zowel begeerd als gehaat wordt door
verschillende partijen, waaronder het Magistraat. Lyra onderneemt een reis naar het element, en moet de
strijd aangaan met demonen, geesten en andersoortige wezens, slechts bewapend met een magisch gouden kompas.
