The group was founded in 1994 by Stephen Harvelom (vocals), Greg Kamp (guitar, backing vocals, songwriter) and Paul De Lisle (bass guitar). The group went through three drummers, the last drummer Jason Sutter joined the Group in March 2006. Among their hit songs like Walkin 'on the Sun and All Star. Originally the band was called Smashmouth, but after signing with Interscope Records group broke its name to two words Smash Mouth. The group often takes as a basis the retro style, which spanned several decades of popularity. This is evident on the songs of The Monkees, I'm a Believer. Usually, the band released only one version of the album. Astro Lounge album released in 1999, is considered the most commercially successful album.
