Plot:
Vinodlaren Georgy Makharashvili får bud om att hans son Goderdzi ligger skadad på ett militärsjukhus. Den gamle georgiske mannen beslutar sig för att besöka honom, men väl på plats finner han att sonen redan skrivits ut och återvänt till västfronten. Fast besluten att återse Goderdzi, lyckas Georgy gå med i röda armén för att rentav kunna kämpa vid hans sida. Året är 1945 och de sovjetiska trupperna kämpar sig allt längre in i det tyska rikets forna territorium. Allt närmare Berlin och befrielsen. Men för Georgy är det inte det annalkande krigsslutet som hägrar i horisonten. Det enda som betyder något är hans sons överlevnad och om han hinner finna honom innan allt är försent. Georgiske regissören Rezo Chkheidze var verksam från tidigt 50-tal fram till Sovjetunionens kollaps - en karriär som avslutades 1988 med en nästan sex timmar lång filmatisering av Cervantes Don Quijote och vars kritiker- och publikmässiga topp uppnåddes med Far till en soldat i mitten av 60-talet. Georgys sökande efter sin son ramar in en kritisk betraktelse över andra världskrigets brutalitet mot såväl människor som natur. Men det är också en historia om kulturellt och åldermässigt utanförskap, där Georgys etniska ursprung och kloka livserfarenhet gör honom till en outsider bland de unga soldaterna. Sergo Zakariadze belönades med sovjetiska filmpriset för sin huvudroll och gör i Chkheidzes mästerliga regi detta krigsdrama till ett av de mer spännande någonsin.

Plot:
Not at all a soviet propaganda piece. Filmed in the Crustchev years,the director just stuck to the human tragic drama.
In this war drama, set towards the end of WW II, a Georgian farmer embarks upon a dangerous journey to find his son. His travails begin after he learns that his boy, a soldier recently wounded in battle, is recuperating in the hospital. The farmer sets off to see him. This man has an abiding love and respect for the beauty of the land. As he journeys he is appalled at the destruction that surrounds him. Once lush and beautiful, the bombed out land has become deeply scarred and barren. He arrives at the hospital to discover that his son has been sent back to his tank unit. The dogged farmer then sets off to find it. He soon finds himself in the midst of a battle. This leads him to join the Soviet army. He fights hard until his tank unit is assigned to attack German vineyards. The destruction of such fertile land appalls him and he stops them. When he finally does catch up with his son again for the finall battle for Berlin,
