Plot:
Och tranorna flyga är ett kärleksdrama i svartvitt som utspelar sig i andra världskrigets Sovjetunionen. Veronika och Boris är tvenne förälskade ryssar på dryga 20 som planerar för ett liv tillsammans när kriget bryter ut och Boris försvinner. Han har, Veronika ovetande, anmält sig frivilligt för att "bekämpa fascismen" som det hette inom sovjetfilmen. När Boris ska dra ut i krig missar Veronika att ta avsked, och kastar förtvivlat ett paket med bröd efter honom, men han ser inget i kaoset vid järnvägsstationen. Föga anar Veronika att detta ska bli det sista hon ser av honom.

Plot:
The film depicts a Soviet family of the professional class. The head of the family, Fyodor Ivanovich, is a doctor and lives with his son, Boris, and daughter, Irina. His mother and nephew Mark also live with the family. The film centers on Boris's girlfriend, Veronika, and her experiences in wartime. She is nicknamed "Belka" ("squirrel").
