Mars attacks Earth after a seemingly bungled translation job. The President and First Lady (played by Nicholson and Close with aplomb) and their young daughter Taffy (Natalie Portman) are taken seige in the White House when the aliens nuke the entire House of Congress. Jack Nicholson does double duty as President of the United States and a Las Vegas promoter; Glenn Close scores as the First Lady; Lisa-Marie is weirdly snakey as the "Martian Girl;" and Sylvia Sidney is memorable as the semi-senile Granny armed with Slim Whitman records.
