Four naive city boys take a break from playing golf and decide to canoe down the Cahulawassee River before the valley is flooded into a huge reservoir. It's not their territory, but their leader Lewis Medlock (Burt Reynolds) arrogantly assumes that he can deal with any challenge that comes his way. His friends Ed, Bobby and Drew (Jon Voight, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox) reluctantly follow him, despite having their own doubts and the canoe trip turns into a violent nightmare.
