Dre (Jaden Smith) is een skateboardende, gameverslaafde jongen die gedwongen is naar China te verhuizen, omdat zijn moeder (Taraji P. Henson) daar voor haar werk heen moet. Dre past zich maar moeilijk aan en wordt in elkaar geslagen door de plaatselijke pestkop. Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) is een klusjesman die Dre’s blauwe oog ziet en hem aanbiedt om hem martial arts en de Chinese taal te leren. Op deze manier kan Dre zich verdedigen tegen de leerlingen van de Li Quan Ha’s Fighting Dragon School of Kung-Fu.
