Aanvankelijk heeft ze geen last van het nieuwe bewind en ze weet een succesvolle carrière van de grond te krijgen. Maar onder Stalin wordt zij opgepakt op verdenking aanhanger te zijn van het Trotskisme. Niet veel later komt ze terecht in een strafkamp en Evgenia krijgt een loodzware tijd die zij alleen weet te overleven dankzij geloof in poëzie.
