Public is a promising adult alternative pop-rock debut from Emm Gryner. She tries all sorts of musical styles on the record. Some work splendidly, others fall a little flat, but throughout it all, she demonstrates considerable melodic skills and lyrical acumen, which is what makes Public an exciting debut.
Labels of "adult alternative" aside, this is the major-label debut from the Canadian songstress admired by David Bowie and many others. In spite of the album's quality, the record-buying "public" shied away and Emm was dropped from the label in a merger, subsequently starting her own, much more successful imprint. Highlights include "Hello Aquarius" and the great single"Summerlong," appropriate for the waning and retrospective days of late August. 1998 Mercury release.
