In de Appalachen is men bezig met het bouwen van een dam in de hoop zo de woeste Cahulawassee rivier wat in te tomen. Vier mannen uit de stad willen de daarom de ruwe rivier nu eens per kano afvaren. Leider van de expeditie is Lewis Medlock, die zijn filosofie over individueel overleven na een onvermijdelijke val van onze beschaving wil bewijzen. Ed Gentrey daarentegen is een echte familievader, die gezellig verankerd leeft in een dagelijkse routine maar een onuitgesproken behoefte heeft naar avontuur. Hij heeft twee van zijn vrienden meegebracht: de joviale vrijgezel Bobby en de gezellige Drew. De eerste dag verloopt zonder incidenten. De volgende ochtend vertrekken Bobby en Ed echter al vroeger dan hun vrienden. Hun eerste ontmoeting van die dag is angstaanjagend én vernederend, én het is het begin van een hels avontuur.
